FerretDB from scratch – a truly open-source alternative for MongoDB by Marcin Gwozdz

FerretDB is a compatibility layer written in Go that translates MongoDB queries into a format that’s compatible with backend databases. This lets developers use existing MongoDB tools and expertise while enjoying the benefits of open-source licensing.

Things simple and flexible

FerretDB puts the developer first, making it easy to move from MongoDB. It uses existing open-source MongoDB drivers and starts out using PostgreSQL as the backend, so users can run FerretDB on-premises or in the cloud. What’s more, the project plans to support other backends like SAP HANA and SQLite, which will give users more flexibility for different use cases.

Community-Driven Development

FerretDB is all about open-source principles and loves to welcome community contributions. You can see the project roadmap, which shows what features and functionalities are coming up next, on the website.

Real-World Adoption

FerretDB is being used in the real world. For example, Unmesh is a digital documentation application, and FastNetMon is a product for the telecommunications industry. Both companies switched to FerretDB because it’s open source and to get around some legal issues.

What’s Next for FerretDB?

FerretDB is actively evolving. The team is going to look into vector search for AI apps and get into AI use cases with PostgreSQL flavors. Right now, FerretDB is at version 1.20.1 and is ready for the real world. It’s got the backing of managed service providers, too. In a nutshell, FerretDB is an open-source contender that addresses concerns about vendor lock-in and licensing restrictions. With its focus on developer experience, community-driven development, and future features, FerretDB is well-positioned to become a major player in the NoSQL database landscape.
